Every furniture tag shows you the width. Almost none of them explain the depth. And yet depth, how far back the seat goes from the front cushion edge to the back cushion, is the dimension that determines whether you'll actually be comfortable on your couch, or whether you'll spend five years perching on the edge of it.Â
At CouchHaus, seat depth is one of the first things we ask every customer about. Not because it's complicated, but because most people haven't thought about it, and getting it wrong is one of the most common regrets we hear from people who bought elsewhere.Â
What seat depth actually means
Seat depth is the measurement from the front edge of the seat cushion to the base of the back cushion. It determines how your body sits in the couch, how supported your legs feel, and whether the sofa feels like something you sink into or something you perch on.
- Standard seat depth: 20–22"
- Deep seat depth: 24–26"
- Shallow seat depth: 18–20"
Most furniture stores only tell you the overall sofa depth, which includes the frame and back. Seat depth is the number that actually matters for comfort.
How to know what depth is right for you
The right depth depends on how you sit, not just how the sofa looks.
Choose standard depth (20–22") if you tend to sit upright, work or read from the couch, or want the sofa to feel neat and proportional in the room. It's the most versatile option and works well for a range of body types.
Choose deep seat depth (24–26") if you like to lounge or curl up, you're over 6' tall, or you want that sink-in, cloud sectional feel. It's also a good call for families where kids are going to live on the thing.
Choose shallow depth (18–20") if you have a smaller frame or shorter legs, or if you're working with a compact space where every inch of depth affects the room layout.
The depth mistake most people makeÂ
Buying for aesthetics instead of for how they actually sit. A deep, cloud-like sectional looks incredible. If you spend most of your time sitting upright on calls or reading, you'll hate it within a month. The most comfortable sofa is the one sized for how you use it, not how it photographs.Â
Why standard furniture stores can’t solve this
Most retailers carry one or two depth options per sofa model. You take what they have. If it doesn't match how you sit, you either compromise or start over. Custom means you specify the exact seat depth for your body and your lifestyle before anything gets built.Â
How CouchHaus handles depth
When you book a design consultation, seat depth is part of the conversation from the start. We ask how you sit, who uses the couch, and what you're replacing, and we use that to recommend the right depth before you commit to anything. Every sofa we build is made to order, so the depth is set to your spec, not whatever happened to be in stock.
Still deciding on fabric? Order free swatches to your door before you commit. Or if you're ready to start building, try the sofa configurator to see how your depth and fabric choices come together.
Not sure where to start? Book a free design consultation, in person in Vancouver or virtually anywhere in Canada. We'll walk through it with you before anything gets built.
Before you shop, write these down:
- Â Do I sit upright or do I lounge?
- Am I tall, average, or have a smaller frame?
- Who else uses this couch, and how do they sit?
- Is depth going to affect how the room flows?
